This is what Yogyakarta itself does not have: high-altitude plateaus, big waterfalls and the volcanoes of East Java. The Dieng Plateau is a long day trip into the mountains; the Bromo, Ijen and Tumpak Sewu routes are two- to four-day tours that mostly end in Bali; and a few listings go to the Karimunjawa islands or the Surakarta (Solo) area. Median prices are far higher than elsewhere on this site because most of these are multi-day.

The East Java routes only make sense as part of a larger journey east. If you are flying on to Bali, a three-day Bromo and Ijen package that drops you there saves a flight; if you are returning to Yogyakarta, it is a lot of driving.
Good to know: Distances are long: operators put Bromo at roughly seven hours by road, and the Ijen crater further on, which is why these are not day trips. Dieng is a day trip but a hard one, and most of what you do there is outdoors. Check where a multi-day tour ends – many finish in Bali, not back in Yogyakarta.
