Bromo and Ijen from Yogyakarta: Is the 3-Day Trip to Bali Worth It?

5 min read

Bromo crater with a plume of steam and the Semeru peak behind, above a sea of cloud at dawn

One long road, two volcanoes

Bromo and Ijen are in East Java, not near Yogyakarta, so every tour here takes at least three days, with long drives on the first and last day. From Yogyakarta they end in Bali, which makes them a one-way route out of the city rather than a loop. If you only have a few days around the city, the temples and the volcano on your doorstep are the easier choice: see Merapi by jeep or lava viewing.

The three days

The pattern is the same in the listings. Day 1 is the drive to the Bromo area. Day 2 starts before dawn with a sunrise at a Bromo viewpoint, then the crater area, and a drive on to the Ijen side. Day 3 starts in the middle of the night with the Ijen hike, and ends with the road to the ferry and Bali. One page says Day 3 involves a strenuous hike, and another says you must be physically fit and warns of “a considerable amount of traveling between destinations”.

Ijen: closures and the blue fire

Check Ijen before you book. The hiking trail closes for 24 hours on the first Friday of every month for a clean-up that the East Java conservation office (BBKSDA) calls “Ijen Rijig”, according to TIMES Indonesia, and two of the tours below also tell you to avoid that day. From 4 September 2026 the area was closed for more than three weeks because of forest fires. BBKSDA reopened it on 28 September 2026; since then every visitor must book a ticket online through the forestry ministry’s Ayo ke Taman Nasional site and bring a torch, a mask and warm clothing, Kompas reported. Ask your provider whether they book the ticket for you.

The blue flames are not guaranteed. All three pages say they depend on the weather, one adds access, and one reviewer’s trip changed because of volcanic activity, fires and road closures.

Which to choose

Choose the first listing if you want the most reviewed trip and can accept that the transfer details depend on the option. Choose the second or third if you want a clear Yogyakarta pickup and a Bali drop-off, and compare what each price covers: meals and entry fees differ. None of these suits you if you cannot manage a night hike or two long driving days. If you need to be back in Yogyakarta, this is the wrong trip; look at day trips from Yogyakarta instead.
