Borobudur and Prambanan in One Day: Shared Tour, Private Driver or Private Tour?
5 min read
Can you do both in a day?
Yes, and that is how most visitors do it. The booking pages put the drive between the two temples at about 1.5 hours, and they list 4 to 12 hours for the whole trip depending on the tour, plus pickup in Yogyakarta. One page says the tour finishes around 5 or 6 pm; another asks you to keep your schedule free until 5 pm for the shared version. Plan the day as a long one.
Three ways to do it
A shared guided tour. Borobudur Climb-Up & Prambanan Shared Guided Tour costs €11.59 per person for about 10 hours, with 4.8 stars from 1,180 reviews. Hotel pickup is between 7:00 and 8:30 am, and the standard group can be as large as 50 people. The temple tickets are not part of the base fare: the page says optional ticket help is available and that ticket payment goes through a link or cash to the driver. The page estimates both temple tickets at about IDR 900,000 per person. It lists climb-up access, but since the tickets are not in the fare, ask whether that estimate covers the climb. Lunch sits in the list next to tips and personal expenses, so plan to pay for it.
Borobudur and Prambanan Temple Tour, Prambanan in the morning costs €16.20, with groups of up to 30. It visits Prambanan first, in the morning, because, according to the page, most visitors arrive there in the afternoon, and then Borobudur. A guide is included at Borobudur for the mandatory small-group visit; at Prambanan a guide can be added. The tickets are included only with the option named for tickets, so pick that one if you want a single price. Pickup or drop-off at Yogyakarta International Airport costs an extra IDR 250,000, collected in cash by the driver.
A car with a driver. Private Car Charter with Driver is priced €36.78 per group of up to five, for 5 or 10 hours. It includes the air-conditioned car, fuel, parking and an English-speaking driver, who waits while you visit. Extra hours cost IDR 100,000 each. Tickets are yours to buy, and the page warns that daily quotas apply to the Borobudur climb and links the temple operator’s ticket site. It adds that the Sultan’s Palace and Taman Sari are closed on Mondays; the palace’s own site confirms that for the palace but lists Taman Sari as open every day. The driver is not a guide inside the temples.
A private tour with tickets inside. Borobudur and Prambanan Private Tour costs €99.93, runs 10 to 12 hours for a group of up to ten, and lists the Borobudur, climb, Pawon, Mendut and Prambanan tickets as included. Borobudur comes first, then Pawon and Mendut, a lunch stop that is optional and extra, and Prambanan. The page says the order may be reversed to secure the climb. You climb more than 100 steps with no lift, and wheelchair users are excluded.
Practical points
The base fares are low because they leave out different things. Compare what each page says is included, not the headline. Prambanan has a restricted area on Mondays, according to one page, so a Monday is a poor day for the full visit. Bring comfortable shoes, sun cream and rain gear. Three of the four pages list drones as not allowed.
If you want sunrise at Borobudur, see Borobudur Sunrise Climb. Prambanan in the evening is in Prambanan at Sunset and the Ramayana Ballet. All the options are under day trips from Yogyakarta and private tours with a driver.
| Tour | Price per person | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Borobudur Climb-Up & Prambanan Shared Guided Tour | €11.59 | 10 hours |
| Borobudur and Prambanan Temple Tour, Prambanan in the morning | €16.20 | 4–10 hours |
| Private Car Charter with Driver | €36.78 per group of up to 5 | 5–10 hours |
| Borobudur and Prambanan Private Tour | €99.93 | 10–12 hours |
Which one
If you want the climb and a guide without managing tickets, choose a tour that lists them as included. For a calm start to the day, the Prambanan-first shared tour with its ticket option is the simplest of the four. Choose the driver if you want your own pace and are happy to buy tickets yourself.
