Borobudur Sunrise Climb: What the Cheap Tour Prices Leave Out
4 min read
The short answer
Yes, you can climb Borobudur on a tour from Yogyakarta, and several listings promise it. The catch is the price. The headline fare on many of these tours covers the car, the driver and a guide, while the temple tickets can sit in a separate option or be paid on the day. Read which option you are choosing before you compare numbers.
What the listings actually say
Guaranteed Borobudur Sunrise Climb and Prambanan costs €14.94 per person and lasts 6 to 11 hours. It rates 4.9 stars from 2,348 reviews. Hotel pickup is part of it, and its page promises access to the temple structure. The same page lists the Borobudur and Prambanan tickets only “if you choose the all-inclusive tour option”, and it also lists the climb ticket and a Setumbu Hill ticket in the same block, so it is not clear from the page alone which ones are covered. Check the option name before paying.
Borobudur Sunrise (Climb-up Assured) & Prambanan costs €23.33 and offers four itineraries from 5 to 11 hours. The sunrise is either from Setumbu Hill or from inside the temple. Its includes list names the climb-up access and the Setumbu Hill fee, but a note further down says entry fees are guaranteed and must be paid separately on the day, depending on your option. The page contradicts itself here, so ask the operator which fees you will pay in cash.
Sunrise or Sunset with Entry Fee costs €66.39, a small group of up to ten, 5 to 8 hours, with the temple entry fee and the climb access on the includes list. It is the tour to pick if you want one price with the tickets inside.
The Borobudur and Prambanan private tour costs €99.93 for a private option and lists the Borobudur, climb and Prambanan tickets as included. If you want a sunrise with it, check the start time on its booking page.
What to expect at the temple
Two other Borobudur tour pages add rules for the day itself: one calls the guided small-group visit at Borobudur mandatory, the other warns that daily quotas apply to the climb, so book early rather than leaving it to the morning. The temple operator InJourney said in July 2025 that every climber must wear upanat, special sandals that protect the stone, and that the climb is now open every day, Mondays included, which it still called a trial. The private tour’s page says there are more than 100 steps to the top and no lift, and it excludes wheelchair users.
Sunrise tours start before dawn. Pickup times differ by option, so look at the start time on the date you select.
Setumbu Hill is a viewpoint with its own entry fee, and it gives you the view of the temple from a distance. Choosing it means free time before you are let onto the structure, according to the page. Sunrise from inside the temple skips that gap but needs the matching option.

Which one to book
If you want to climb and you do not want surprises, pick the tour whose includes list names the temple entry and the climb together, and keep a little cash for anything the page marks as paid on the day. If you are on a tight budget, the cheaper tours can still work, provided you add the ticket cost to the comparison. Combining with Prambanan is covered in Borobudur and Prambanan in One Day. All temple tours are listed under Borobudur and Prambanan tours.
For most first-time visitors, the small-group Sunrise or Sunset with Entry Fee tour is the practical choice, because its includes list names both the temple entry and the climb.
