Jomblang Cave and Pindul Cave: What the Day Involves and Who Should Skip It
5 min read
What you are booking
The Jomblang and Pindul combination is one of the most reviewed day trips from Yogyakarta, and it is a long, physical day of about 10 hours. One page describes the first half: you are lowered 60 metres into a well-like vertical cave on double safety ropes, walk a muddy rocky path at the bottom and see sunlight come in through the opening. After lunch you drive on to Pindul for the water part.
The operators differ in the details, so this guide sticks to what their booking pages state.
The three main options
Jomblang Cave & Pindul Cave Adventure Trip costs €15.41 per person for about 10 hours and has 4.9 stars from 1,093 reviews. The inclusions list hotel pickup, an air-conditioned vehicle, lunch, water, coffee and tea, guides, cave safety gear and insurance. Cave entry fees are included only in the all-inclusive option, according to the page. Groups are up to 13 for the standard tour, up to 11 for a private one.
Guided Jomblang Cave and Pindul Cave Adventure costs €12.11 for 10 to 11 hours. It describes a welcome drink, lunch with a soft drink, the Jomblang harness, boots, helmet and headlamp, and a life jacket and phone cover for Pindul. Entry fees are included if an all-inclusive option is selected. The small-group version is up to 5 people and the private one up to 14.
Jomblang Cave & Pindul Cave including guides, lunch & ticket costs €13.40 for about 10 hours and has several package options. If you pick the one without cave tickets, the page says to bring cash: IDR 500,000 for Jomblang and IDR 200,000 for Pindul.
Who should not book it
The guided adventure page excludes children under 5, pregnant women, people over 70 and people over 135 kg. That is the strictest list in this group. For the other two, a family with a young child should ask the operator about a minimum age before booking and check the exact option. A rope descent, mud and cold water are not a good match for anyone nervous about heights or small spaces.
What to bring
The pages ask for slippers or flip-flops, a towel, swimwear or a change of clothes, sun cream and socks, and some cash. Phones can get wet at Pindul; one inclusion list names a splash-proof phone cover.
Mind the clock
The drive from Yogyakarta is about 1.5 hours each way, according to the page. With the descent, the lunch and the water part, the day is long. If you also want the temples, do not put them in the same day. See Borobudur and Prambanan in One Day for how long that day runs. All the cave trips are listed under Jomblang and Pindul cave tours.

Which to choose
For most visitors, the all-inclusive option of Jomblang Cave & Pindul Cave Adventure Trip is the one to book, because it lists lunch, safety gear, insurance and the cave entries in one place. If you want a smaller group, the guided adventure offers a group of up to five. Whatever you pick, read the option names; the same tour page sells packages with and without tickets, and the cash part is paid on the day.
