From Yogyakarta Airport (YIA) to Your Hotel: Train or Private Transfer?

Two ways into town

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) lies outside the city, and Railink puts its station 12.1 km southwest of Wates station. This guide compares two ways into town: the airport train and a private transfer you book in advance. Which one fits depends on your luggage, your hotel and the time you land.

The airport train

Railink, the operator, says the trip from Yogyakarta Station (Tugu) takes about 39 minutes on the YIA regular service and about 35 minutes on the YIA Express; the Railink report on the airport station gives both figures. For the current timetable and fares, see railink.co.id before you plan around a particular train. A train takes you to the station, not to your hotel, so you still need a short ride from Tugu.

The private transfer

Yogyakarta Airport: Private Transfer To/From Hotels is listed from €9.15, 4.8 stars from 142 reviews. The page quotes the price per person even though the car is private, so check the total for your group before you book. The page describes a private one-way transfer between YIA and a hotel or other address in Yogyakarta. The driver waits in the arrival hall with a sign showing your name and sends a WhatsApp message with contact details shortly before pickup. You are asked to give your flight number on the next booking page.

The list names a private transfer, an air-conditioned car, bottled water, airport parking fees, unlimited waiting time for delayed flights and unlimited baggage. A VIP parking area is optional for arrivals and costs IDR 100,000 per car, paid in cash to the driver, and a hotel in the Borobudur area costs IDR 250,000 extra per car. The listing is marked as wheelchair accessible; confirm with the provider that the vehicle suits your needs. It cancels free up to 24 hours before.

Which to choose

If you arrive late, with a lot of luggage, or have a hotel far from Tugu, the private transfer saves a change of vehicle, and the waiting time covers a delayed flight. If you travel light and your hotel is near the station, the train is the simpler route and you can weigh the transfer’s price against the train ticket. After arrival, the first outing most visitors plan is Borobudur and Prambanan in One Day.
