Yogyakarta on Foot: Malioboro, the Sultan's Palace and Taman Sari by Walking Tour
5 min read
Three walks, three parts of the city
Yogyakarta’s centre is built along one line, and the guided walks split it into pieces. One group starts at the railway monument and follows Malioboro Street to Beringharjo Market. Another leaves from the main post office and goes to the Sultan’s Palace and the Taman Sari water castle. Picking the walk means picking the part you want, because none of them tries to do all of it.
The Malioboro walks
2-Hour City Introduction on a Walking Tour costs €11.12 per person, is limited to 8 people and has 4.8 stars from 147 reviews. It starts at the Yogyakarta Station Monument, goes along Malioboro, passes a Chinese-Indonesian community gate and Beringharjo Market, and ends at Kilometer Zero. The page frames it as an orientation: what to eat, which sights you can do alone, how to get around. The page lists the walk and an English-speaking guide; tips for the guide sit in the same list and are usually paid on top.
Malioboro Walking Tour and 5 Local Food Tastings is €11.08 for 2 hours. It starts at the station, explains why the street sits on the city’s north-south axis, passes the Presidential Palace and stops for snacks. The page lists guides in English, Arabic and French, and marks the tour wheelchair accessible; confirm the route with the operator before you rely on that.
Malioboro Heritage Walking Tour with Storyteller is €14.94 for 2.5 hours, in a group of up to 15, starting at the steam-engine monument and finishing at Hamzah Batik on Malioboro.
The palace and water castle walk
Sultan’s Palace & Tamansari Guided Walking Tour costs €15.97 for 3 hours, with no more than 5 people. It starts at the main post office, spends about an hour inside the palace, walks on through the neighbourhood and spends about an hour at Taman Sari, including an arts-and-crafts market, then takes a 20-minute pedicab ride back. Its list names visits to the palace and Taman Sari and the becak ride, but not the entry tickets, so ask the operator whether they are covered. The page also sets a dress code: shoulders covered and long trousers, because shorts are not permitted inside the Sultan’s Palace.
The Monday problem
A private-car page says the Sultan’s Palace and Taman Sari are both closed on Mondays. The palace’s own tourism site is more precise: the Kedhaton, the palace complex itself, opens 8:30 am to 2:30 pm and is closed on Mondays, while Taman Sari is listed as open every day from 9 am to 3 pm. If the palace walk is the plan, do not choose a Monday, and do not start late in the day. The palace site also asks for sleeved clothing, no shorts or skirts, and no hats in the museum area.
Practical points
Yogyakarta is hot and humid. The walks last two to three hours, so carry water and wear light shoes.
If you plan an evening, the food walks are separate trips; see food tours in Yogyakarta. All the guided walks are under city tours in Yogyakarta. For the day trips that cannot be done on foot, read Borobudur and Prambanan in One Day.

Which one to book
A first-time visitor who wants to understand the city should start with the 2-hour introduction: it is short, small and ends at Kilometer Zero. Add the palace and Taman Sari walk on another day, not a Monday. Choose the tasting version if the snacks are the draw.
